Thing # 5
In reading the Students 2.0 blog, it brought back memories of when I was trying to fill out an application for college over 40 something years ago. I had only 2 sisters and 1 brother that had attended college and they were not around to help me. I thought I had to follow in one of my sister's footsteps and take the same classes as she did since she had been so successful. That major was not really what I wanted to do, but I had no one close to ask advise. If I could have traveled and learned more about the world and then chose my major and may not have wasted or taken 5 years of classes before deciding what I wanted to be when I grew up 25 years later.

I've read several articles about this same thing. Our kids are still so young and really don't know what they want to do when they have to decide in college. I wonder how many college graduates have a job using their degree background.
ReplyDeleteWow, Thing 5? That's awesome. Look how much you're doing! You're going to be able to keep up with your children and even the grandkids. You'll be the coolest! I like the blogs, but it makes me nervous that kids are going to think that what is blogged about is actual truth. . .
ReplyDeleteI understand the frustration feeling you had when you were younger. I also believe it has become an even more issue for kids now days. Parents pressure kids to go to college (which I am all for college). But, some kids are not made for college. Some need to weld, build things, work in the mission field, or travel for other reasons. I agree that time is wasted when we are forced into a major. One, we may not want to do that for the rest of our lives, but feel pressured to chose. Two, money and time will be wasted when our heart is not ready for that path. Knowledge is power, the more kids can see, experience, and learn about the more successful they will be in whatever career they chose!
